I submitted 2 design concepts to the City of Sydney 2018 Creative Hoardings Programme, unfortunately neither were selected.
NATIVE FLORA (2018)
The purpose of this artwork is to draw attention and awareness to the native flowers of Australia and to highlight their beauty to bring a conscious interest and care for our natural world. The flowers will create a forest feel, due to the scale of the artwork with the aim that it will bring back some greenery and nature to our ever-increasing concrete city.
In addition to the illustration of the flowers I also intend to potentially include their English and Indigenous names. This will allow those who pass by further insight into the natural local history and access a greater connection with their surroundings. The flowers should provide aesthetic value to their environments as well as to evoke feelings of calm, grounding and curiosity.
This artwork aims to reiterate that we will not have the beautiful plants that we see around us for much longer if we don’t care for and protect them. This land gives us such unique flora and fauna and I want to share that with people passing by.
The concept of this artwork is purely to make someone smile or remember that its okay if today isn’t working out, it will be a bit better tomorrow. As a person who continues to battle with mental illness, sometimes I come across little reminders and think ‘YES! that’s so true, I need to remember that’
I want meaningful statements like “Small steps still take you forward” or “Don’t believe everything you think” to create a feeling of enrichment for those who see it. My aim is to create a wall that people can walk past and see these little reminders and get a little slice of happiness in their day.
Accompanying these reminders are little illustrations to highlight the statements and add a playful feel. The typography will be hand drawn along with highlights of yellow to make the artwork feel warmer. The purpose of this artwork is to create a sense of happiness and warmth to alleviate some of the weight that we carry through life as we work towards a more mentally healthy community.
